Allan Stitt is a mediator, arbitrator, negotiator, and ADR systems design specialist at Stitt Feld Handy Group in Toronto. He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto Law School and a Lecturer at University of Windsor Law School, teaching courses in Negotiation and Alternative Dispute Resolution.
He has also taught courses at the University of Notre Dame Law School (as an Assistant Adjunct Professor) and at the University of Lisbon (Portugal). He has also designed and taught workshops in Europe, Asia, Australia and Africa.
After earning his B.Comm at the University of Toronto in 1984, Allan
earned his LL.B. at the University of Windsor Law School and his J.D.
at the University of Detroit Law School, graduating first in his class
in both law schools. He then earned his LL.M. at Harvard Law School.
While at Harvard Law School, he studied negotiation and ADR with
Professor Roger Fisher, Professor Frank Sander, and Bruce Patton. He
subsequently completed advanced negotiation training at Harvard. Allan
returned to Harvard on a number of occasions to act as a Teaching
Assistant to Professor Fisher.
He is a past President of the ADR Institute of Canada, the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Canada and of the Arbitration and Mediation Institute of Ontario, and a past Chair of the ADR Section of the Canadian Bar Association (Ontario). He has designed ADR systems for a number of organizations including the Canadian Bankers Association, the Ontario Human Rights Commission, the Law Society of Upper Canada, and Canadian Tire Corporation.
Allan is both a Chartered Mediator (C.Med.) and a Chartered Arbitrator (C.Arb.). He has mediated two party and multi-party disputes in numerous contexts including commercial, employment, corporate governance, workplace, banking, personal injury, and breach of contract. He has also arbitrated numerous commercial cases. He is a Roster Mediator, Ontario Mandatory Mediation Program-Toronto. He is the editor of the CCH ADR Practice Manual, and his book on ADR systems design, ADR For Organizations , was a bestseller. His most recent book, Mediating Commercial Disputes , was published in 2003.Search
