In September, Toronto Talks presented TAX TALK with Jerry Henshall, a Chartered Accountant with CA4IT and Janie Goldstein, Vice President of the Canadian Medical Discovery Fund on Tuesday September 25th at 7pm @ Metro Hall, Room 313.





Janie Goldstein, B.Eng., P. Eng., M.B.A.,(Harvard), Vice President of the (CMDF).Canadian Medical Discoveries Fund , discussed the Tax benefits of investing in a is a labour sponsored investment fund (LSIF). If the LSIF was invested into an RRSP and you are in a 48 percent tax bracket, she illustrated that a $5000 investment would only cost $750.


Jerry Henshall B.Sc., C.A., MCP discussed the Tax strategies for self employed professionals which included the pro's and cons of being a sole proprietor versus incorporation. The concept of income splitting with spouses as well as lower tax brackets gave incorporation a distinct advantage under certain circumstances. Janie emphasized that investing in biotechnology has huge implications for humankind. She discussed the companies that CMDF currently invest in and the remarkable achievements they have made. An example was AEGera Therapeutics, a private company in CMDF's portfolio, located in Montreal that announced a breakthrough technique in stem cell research using adult human skin. This promises to hold great promise for both health care and the Canadian economy.
